A statement from CiNI on the cuts to Core Grant funding by the Department of Health

Published 22nd May 2023

Responding to the cuts to Core Grant funding announced by the Department of Health, Pauline Leeson, Chief Executive of Children in Northern Ireland said:

“Following the raft of cuts already announced by departments, the news that Core Grant funding from the Department of Health will end in September 2023 is a savage blow to Community and Voluntary Sector organisations that deliver services for children and their families.

“Our Members are already struggling with the impact of inflation and this decision will threaten the future sustainability of their organisations.

“It will likely lead to redundancies and reduced provision of services, increased pressure on statutory bodies, and directly harm our most vulnerable and marginalised children.

“The ongoing situation regarding departmental decision-making in the context of the budget set by the Secretary of State is not acceptable and we have written to the Head of the Civil Service to seek urgent clarity around the duties on government to provide services for children, and the need to protect the Community and Voluntary Sector who deliver essential services on behalf of government.”
