Irish Doctors Orchestra concert raises funds for Children in Northern Ireland

In March 2024, the all-Ireland Irish Doctors Orchestra performed at the Ulster Hall, Belfast to raise funds for Children in Northern Ireland, to support our work to improve outcomes for children, young people, and families.

Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Irish Doctors Orchestra is an all-Ireland fellowship of medical professionals who are also classically trained musicians. The concept of the IDO is to provide an opportunity for medics from across Ireland to get together and create music as a therapy to the stresses and challenges we all face in our professional lives. The doctors joined together for rehearsals over a period of days which included coaching by professional musicians and culminated in a public performance.

The Ulster Hall concert featured over eighty IDO members, led by professional conductor, Sinead Hayes. The choirs of St Dominic’s Grammar School and St Malachy’s College provided a stunning accompaniment on the night.

The programme included Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino Overture and ‘Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves’ from Nabucco, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’. The concert ended with the rousing ‘O Fortuna’ from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Children in Northern Ireland, and our parenting helpline Parentline NI, would like to express heartfelt thanks to the Irish Doctors Orchestra for choosing us as their 2024 charity partner. The concert was outstanding, and we were extremely proud to attend. The money raised was an amazing total of £8582, which will be used throughout our work for children, young people and families in Northern Ireland.
